Walter Pater through his work at Oxford became a well known English essayist and critic of art and literature. He was also an author of fiction.
Clara Pater, Walter's younger sister, became involved with the study of Greek and Latin with other women in the neighborhood. These women were also part of the Ladies' Committee for Higher Education which in 1878 became Association of Education of Women. Under its auspices two women's halls were established at Oxford. Clara became the first Classics Tutor and first Resident Tutor at one of these.
