Cecil Jackson-Cole was a successful business man as the owner and manager of Andrews Furnishers with branches in London and Oxford. In 1942 he joined a group of Oxford Quakers concerned about the conditions in Greece at that time. A meeting was held and as a result the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief was born. He became the first Secretary and led the post-war growth of Oxfam as a global charity. The shop at 17 Broad Street was established as the first shop for Oxfam in 1947, an Oxfam shop continues to operate from this location.
