This education-related quotation was spoken first by Diogenes Laertius (412 - 323 B.C.). It appears on this school with one word altered. The original quotation was "every State" and this etching shows "the State."

Quotation as shown: "The foundation of the State is the education of its youth."

The words appear high above the front (east) entrance of the former Chandler High School, located at 515 Steele in the northwest section of Chandler. This building was constructed by the WPA in 1941, and added to the National Register of Histroic Places in 1996. It served as the Chandler High School from 1942 to 1994.

An additional etched quotation appears above the south entrance as reads: "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom and with all thy getting, get understanding. Proverbs"
