William Morris began his manufacturing career by manufacturing bicycles. It was begun here in his family home. In 1904 he began manufacturing automobiles, he was the first British manufacturer to develop mass production techniques to manufacture cheap cars. He developed a substantial fortune. His own life style was modest and he devoted much of his amassed fortune to philanthropic efforts. Giving away £30 million the equivalent today to £700 million. His principal efforts in Oxford include Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Nuffield Institute for Medical Research, Nuffield College and the Nuffield Foundation for medical, scientific and social research.
