At the bottom of the hill, at N51*49.777 W000*12.933, there is an old blue enamelled sign erected by the RSPCA. It reads:-

Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Head quarters, 105 Jermayn St, London SW.

Please slacken hame or bearing rein when going up hill.

Complaints of cruelty to be forwarded to the secretary at head quarters.

So what is that all about then?

Way back, when this was the not the OLD Great North Rd, and horses were dragging coaches up this hill, the team that was pulling the coach long distance would be rested for this stretch. Teams were employed to take coaches up the hill only and would then be returned to the bottom for the next coach. The main team would then take over and continue the journey on to London from the top.

Of course, this was tough work for the horses and they would arrive at the top of the hill sweating and steaming.
