Facing it and terminating East Lawn is a similar garden around a
bronze STATUE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON, cast from Jean Antoine Houdon's study in the capitol at Richmond.
---- Virginia - A Guide to the Old Dominion State, 1940.
"It" in the paragraph is STATUE OF JEFFERSON which stands across the lawn.
Description per Smithsonian Institute: "Washington stands erect, head uncovered, cane in proper right hand; his proper left arm rests upon a bundle of 13 fasces -- symbolic of the 13 colonies -- upon which he has already hung his sword; behind the figure, and leaning against the fasces, is a plowshare. His clothing represents the boots and regimentals of his Revolutionary Army." reference
Statue of the first U.S. President is located just to the north of the main lawn shaded by some low trees and shrubs. The easily recognizable profile was being sketched by some students for an art class.
