This vehicle is located in the outdoors display area of the Minnesota Military Museum on the grounds of Camp Ripley near Little Falls, MN. There are numerous equipment displays and an indoor museum with many artifacts, weapons, uniforms and more.

The signage on this vehicle reads:

M578 Ligth Armored Recovery Vehicle

The M578 Light Armored Recovery Vehicle was first produced by the FMC Corporation in 1962. It utilized the same chassis as two self-propelled artillery weapons, the M-107 (175mm) and the M-110 (8 inch) Howitzer.

The M578 is used as a recovery and repair vehicle by all arms including self propelled artillery battalions, mechanized infantry battalions, armored cavalry regiments. In addition to recovering such vehicles as the M110 and the M109, the M578 is also used to change major components in the field, such as engines, tranmissions and tank barrels.

The crane is mounted at the rear of the hull and can be transversed 360 degrees. The crane can lift a maximum of 13 tons. The main winch has 229 feet of cable and a maximum capacity of 27 tons. A large spade is mounted at the rear of the vehicle when the winch or crane is being used.
