Main Battle Tank (M60A3)

The M60 Main Battle Tank was developed in the late 1950's to counteract superior Soviet tanks. It entered service in 1960 as a replacement for the Army's M48 medium tank and, was then upgraded or retrofitted almost continuously until 1987 when production ceased. For example, to increase the accuracy of its 105mm main gun, the newer M60s - such as the M60A3 displayed here - were usually equipped with laser range finders, computerized fire-control systems, and thermal night sights. A well-trained crew could fire six to eight rounds a minute.

It did not see combat in Vietnam, but its worth was clearly demonstrated during the 1973 Yom Kippur War in the Middle East. Supplied by the U.S. to Israel, the M60 proved far superior to the Soviet-built T-62 tanks being used by Egypt and Syria, contributing to Israel's swift victory. M60A3 tanks also saw action in the Persian Gulf War (1990-91. They have been replaced by the M1 Abrahms Main Battle Tank.
