The Grange was originally built in 1657 as a house for the son of Sir Marmaduke Rawdon, a local dignitary. In Victorian times the building became a preparatory school for Eton and Rugby. One of its famous pupils was Arthur James Balfour, who later became Prime Minister in 1902. The school was transferred to Sussex in 1905.
