The beginnings of the Bristol Herald Courier start in 1865 with the Bristol News. In 1870, the Bristol Courier was launched. In 1903, the Bristol Herald came into being. In 1907, the Herald was combined with the Courier and became the Bristol Herald Courier.

In 1986, the Bristol Virginia-Tennessean, an afternoon newspaper, was also combined with the morning editions of the Bristol Herald Courier operations.

It is now a daily newspaper with 38,088 copy circulation serving the two Bristol cities which lie on both sides of the state line - in Virginia and Tennessee. In 2006, full color pages were addeed to the paper from their new production facility
