As with every train station in Cambodia, at the present time, the train station for the town of Battambang, the second largest town in Cambodia, approximately 300kms to the north west of Phnom Penh, is non-operational, however, plans are afoot to restore the national rail system. In a few years, possibly, depending on the synergistic vagaries of economics and politics, the trains will run from this station again.
The station is found on the west side of the town. The building is currently (late 2010) occupied by squatters. It looks to be in poor repair, but to my untrained eye, structurally sound. The rails also look to be in good condition. The station has the French colonial era look, which is to say, yellow in colour, with a hint of art-deco.
The station serves the route from Phnom Penh through to the border with Thailand. Before the Vietnam War the Cambodian rail system ran from Phnom Penh to Bangkok. Here's hoping for a restoration.
