Sihanoukville is Cambodia's only deep water port (and one not overly busy at this time), and also a small, beach resort town, ~200kms to the south west of Phnom Penh. The town itself, while a pleasant spot, is not heavily populated and relatively quiet, certainly during the tourist low season.

The town is named after King Norodom Sihanouk (the father of the current king of Cambodia). Affectionately known to westerners as 'snooky-ville'. It is also referred to by its original name by Cambodians, 'Kampong Som'.

The train station is to the north of the town, close to the harbour, but abandoned. The Cambodian train system is currently not in operation, however, that is changing. Plans are underway to rebuild and restore the trains of Cambodia.

Judging by its appearance the station was built in the 60s (it has that 60s vibe). The deep water port was constructed in the early 1950s, giving the tiny, pre-existing town new importance. It was most likely in that timeframe that the railway was built. The rails run directly from the port through the station.

The station building is two storied, and certainly large enough to handle a deal of traffic. There are several smaller station buildings are the passenger area. At the moment it is entirely unmaintained, with squatters living in the empty offices. To my untrained eye, the structure and the rails appears sound. Here's hoping for the future.
