Michael
Deck was born February 17, 1759 in Augusta County, Virginia. He enlisted May 5,
1778, at the age of 19 under Captain Robert Craven. For a short time he served
as a bodyguard to George Washington. He first came to Illinois in 1778 with the
George Rogers Clark expedition to Cahokia and Kaskaskia. He enlisted again in
1781 under Captain Michael Coker; he was in the battle of Yorktown and witnessed
Cornwallis surrender. He moved to Illinois in 1829 and settled in Decksprairie
named after him. He died April 13, 1843 at the age of 84 and was buried in what
is now called Decks Cemetery.
