Henry Morton Stanley was a Welsh journalist and explorer famous for his exploration of Africa and his search for David Livingstone. Stanley is often remembered for the words uttered to Livingstone upon finding him: "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"
The monolith is engraved with his African name 'BULA MATARI' meaning Breaker of Rocks, referring to the fact that he introduced the sledgehammer to the Congo enabling miles of roads to be built.
The link to document gives the proof this is Dartmoor granite.
