Central Market Town Clock—Kampong Cham Town, Cambodia. - Town Clocks on Waymarking.com

I had given up all hope of finding a town clock north of Phnom Penh, when I spied this clock above the northern entrance to the central market of the town of Kampong Cham. The market building itself is modelled on that of the art deco styled central market of Phnom Penh (WM9K9Y)—an amazing structure. There are four wings radiating outwards from a central core, however, due to the congestion and signs of wear, the true nature of the central market building is not readily apparent from street level.

The clock itself is clearly an intrinsic component of the structure, and was most likely included in the original design. There is no indication of the construction date, however, it reasonable to assume a date after 1935, the date of the construction of the Phnom Penh central market.

Needless to say, the clock is not operational. It would have seen a great deal of history pass by. Most likely, the last time it worked was in the 1970s. Here's hoping that one day the good people of Kampong Cham repair the clock and the central market.
