Kratie is a pleasant, small town, on the Mekong river, and capital of the province of the same name. It contains two bus stations. One deals with inter-provincial buses, the other with 'local' buses, those which carry people around the province. This bus station is the latter.

The local station is set back a little from the Mekong foreshore, and set in an open area. Based purely on its visual appearance, I suspect that this bus was built back in French colonial days. During the day this space is a market, filled with busy and noisy streets stalls. The station itself is more of a rendezvous point than a fully functional station. Buses arrive and depart from here, but passengers tend to wait in the street market, while the station itself is more of a hangout area for locals to sit and discuss the important issues of the day.

There is not a great deal of traffic, perhaps a dozen buses a day. I should also add, that the 'buses' are small vans, with seats (pictures in gallery), and carry a dozen to twenty people. Restrooms, yes, but you might want to practice your deep sea holding your breath technique. I will also add, that if you find yourself on one of these local buses, do not be surprised if you find yourself sharing space with a (non-house trained) pig or a few chickens!
Interesting architecture:
The style is of the French colonial period, vaguely art-deco and yellow in colour.

Food and drink?: yes
