On the wall of Princes Street across the road from the Bank of England can be found this delightful old Corporation of London blue plaque marking the location of the General Letter Office which stood in Post House Yard between 1653 and 1666. The plaque proclaims: "Here were struck in 1661 the first postmarks in the world." 1666 was the year of the Great Fire of London so nothing remains of the original Office.
