On the grounds of the 45th Infantry Division Museum at 2145 N.E. 36th Street in Oklahoma City, stands a red granite monument dedicated to alumni of the Chilocco Indian Boarding School who served in WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam.
The monument is located in a grass area to the east of the museum, along with many other war memorials and static military equipment displays. It was dedicated on June 9, 1990 by Chilocco's National Alumni Association on Chilocco's 106th Anniversary.
In 1884, the U.S. Government established five Indian Boarding schools at Carlisle, Haskell, Fort Simcoe, Chemawa and Chilocco. Over the years, thousands of Indian children were schooled at Chilocco. The school closed in 1980, after 96 years of providing vocational and academic education and training to Native Anmerican across the U.S.
In 1986 the school grounds and buildings were given to five tribes: Kaw, Otoe-Missouria, Pawnee, Ponca and Tonkawa. A move is underway at this time, to renovate the 165 acres of the main campus, with its 72 limestone buildings.
