Since 1998, a replica of the Eiffel Tower has stood in front of Dreyfus Antiques store at 1901 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX 78705. This is where N. Lamar Blvd. and W. MLK Blvd. meet. George Dreyfus is the owner and antique dealer of Dreyfus Antiques and goes to France four or more times a year to tour various cities there in order to purchase more antiques to sell in Austin. He also offers to escort an individual to France in order for that person to personally inspect and pick the specific antiques they may find and want. George Dreyfus bought the 1/50 scale replica of the Eiffel Tower from the French artist who created it, Monsieur Valtat. Valtat was inspired to create this 21 foot high replica during the 100 year anniversary celebration of the original Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. Gustave Eiffel designed and built the real Eiffel Tower for the Universal Exposition of 1889, winning from 107 competing projects. Originally, the Eiffel Tower was to be demolished after the Exposition, but Eiffel convinced the city planners that the Tower would be not only artistic but scientific too. Eiffel managed to get a meterorological station, a radio transmitter and a television antenna installed onto the Tower. Eventually the city relented and the Eiffel Tower has stayed to become one of the most visited and recognized icons in the world.
