The Herzog August Library, known also as Bibliotheca Augusta, has an international importance for its collection from the Middle Ages and Early modern Europe. The library is overseen by the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture. The HAB cooperates with the International College of Scientifics.
The library was founded by Julius, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, in 1572. In the 17th century it was the largest library north of the Alps.

It is the most expencive book shown in a library.
The Gospels of Henry the Lion were intended by Henry the Lion, The manuscript, containing 266 pages with the text of the four gospels, 50 of them full page illustrations.The gospel book, kept in the Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolfenbuttel, and for security reasons is displayed only once every two years.

Die Herzog August Bibliothek, auch bekannt unter den Namen „Bibliotheca Augusta“, ist eine international bekannte Bibliothek und bedeutende Forschungsstätte vor allem für das Mittelalter und die frühe Neuzeit.
An der HAB wird Forschung betrieben und gefördert, unter anderem durch Stipendien. Regelmäßig werden wissenschaftliche Tagungen und kulturelle Veranstaltungen sowie Ausstellungen von überregionaler Bedeutung organisiert.
Gegründet wurde die Bibliothek von Herzog Julius zu Braunschweig-Lüneburg (1528–1589), der in seiner Residenzstadt Wolfenbüttel seine Büchersammlung ordnete und im Jahre 1572 eine erste Liberey-Ordnung erließ. Dieses Datum gilt als die Geburtsstunde der Wolfenbütteler Bibliothek.
Ihren legendären Ruf begründete jedoch der gebildete und weitgereiste Herzog August der Jüngere (1579–1666), der seit seiner Jugend ein eifriger Büchersammler war.
Erbaut wurde das heutige Bibliothekshauptgebäude als florentinischer Palazzo angelegtes Gebäude zwischen 1883 und 1887. Das Hauptgebäude dient weitestgehend als Museum. Die Medien sind in weiteren verschiedenen Gebäuden untergebracht.

In der Herzog August Bibliothek befinden sich heute ca. 1.000.000 Medieneinheiten, darunter über 12.000 Handschriften, fast 3000 Inkunabeln und ca. 350.000 alte Drucke (Erscheinungsjahr vor 1830).

Dieses Buch wurde in London am 6. Dezember 1983 für 32,5 Millionen Mark bei Sotheby's zurückgekauft.
Das Evangeliar Heinrichs des Löwen wurde von Heinrich dem Löwen beauftragt. Das Manuskript enthält 266 Seiten mit dem Text der vier Evangelien, von denen 50 ganzseitig illustriert sind. Das Evangeliar wird aus Sicherheitsgründen nur einmal alle zwei Jahre der Öffentlichkeit gezeigt.
