Kratie ("Kraz-cher"), situated on the east bank of the wide Mekong River, lies approximately 150kms north east of Phnom Penh (300kms via road), reached via a seven hour (not four, or five, as you will be told) bus journey along National Highway 7, which winds its way sinuously along the Mekong River. The town has few attractions, apart from the, perhaps slightly over hyped, fresh water dolphins. The local economy is based upon the production of rice and other agricultural goods. Few people leave or depart this small and quiet, but very pleasant town, and perhaps a few dozen tourists each day, wander along the foreshore.

The bus station for the half dozen or so buses a day is small, has a French colonial era look to it, and is situated on the Mekong river bank, an attractive spot. The bus station itself seems to be more of a rendezvous point for people and buses. Tickets are sold, and people wait outside the station, while inside people watch tv, and socialise. The bus station also seems to double as the ferry embarkation point to Koh Trong island, opposite Kratie, across the Mekong. Teenagers, of both genders, lollygag around in the cool of the evening.

The bus station is most likely privately owned and operated. It is the 'long distance' (inter-provincial) buses stop here during the day. There is another station, inside the town, for local buses. Tickets are largely sold in guest houses in the town.

There is no food or drink or facilities at the station itself, but plenty around from food stalls and the two classy cafes in the town.
Interesting architecture:
The station is coloured in the French colonial era, public building, yellow. It also has a slight art-deco look to it, also reminiscent of the French period.
