The sign next to the well indicates the following:

"ARTESIAN WELL

A RELEASE OF GROUNDWATER BY
MEANS OF A PIPE DRILLED THROUGH
A CLAY LAYER APPROXIMATELY 30
FEET BELOW THE SOIL SURFACE.
TAPPING WATER UNDER HYDROSTATIC
PRESSURE WHICH FORCES ITS WAY
TO THE SURFACE. IT IS AN EXAMPLE
OF THE GROUNDWATER RESOURCES
OF THE NEW JERSEY PINELANDS.
ESTIMATED TO CONTAIN AS MUCH AS
12 TRILLION GALLONS IN THE
COHANSEY-KIRKWOOD AQUIFERS."
