This sign of history is about a flour and saw mill that was built near this site before 1794. The mill is gone but the site is marked with an old round mill stone and a plaque. It is located along White Horse Road (State Route 2023) in Berlin, Pennsylvania. Here is the text of the plaque:
ALTFATHER MILL
Built before 1794
Four brothers Walter, Lewis, Elmer and Robert Altfather direct decendents of
Friedrich Altvater provided this memorial in memory of our ancestors who built
this mill and who were pioneers of this area.
It's recorded in history that Washington's troops watered their horses here at
the mill on their way to Berlin during the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794.
