Six simple utilitarian wooden buildings on this 40 acre site were constructed in 1933 as barracks for the Civilian Conservation Corps, which President Franklin D. Roosevelt established to give people jobs during the Great Depression. As many as 400 men lived in these clapboard buildings while they worked on WPA projects in north eastern San Diego County.
The buildings were used by the California State Guard after 1940 and later by the California Department of Forestry. Today the buildings are empty. The County of San Diego has yet to decide the fate of the site.
The buildings are located at 28741 Cole Grade Road, Valley Center, CA.
