Whitbarrow Scar is a limestone ridge, aligned roughly north to south. There are several lime kilns around the periphery as coppicing woodland, for potash, and limestone are both readily available. The kiln is built into a slope, with a ramp to load material in to the top hopper, lined with fire bricks and made from faced limestone. Broad Oak kiln has the charge hole fenced off, with a stile, suggesting that LDNPA rebuilt and take care of this kiln.
Production would have stopped when transport became easier, when the railways (1850) came and when the turnpike crossed the bottom of the valley in 1830.

Parking for cars at the kiln.
