In the Wickford section of North Kingstown, by the Old Narragansett Church, is the church cemetery for St. Paul's Church, and includes graves of former ministers and the family plot of the Updikes.
According to a web site tracking historical cemeteries in Rhode Island, this cemetery currently has 47 graves and is about 200'x200' in size.
According to another source, which posts the text of the brochure for tours at the Old Narragansett Church, the Lodowick Updike had offered land to be used as the setting place for the church building which was located about five miles southwest. His grandfather was a prominent figure of the church and in the deed he stated that "he was carrying out the intent and will of his grandfather who desired a church in his village." This building remained as the active church until 1848, when a new building was built on Main Street and the congregation moved there. The building is still used for vesper services in July and August of that congregation.
A sign within the church is about a member of the Updike family. It states, "In memory of Daniel Berkeley Updike, Printer and Scholar, Born in the Parish of St. John's Church, Providence, February 24, 1860, died in Boston, December 29, 1941; a benefactor of this church."
When facing the church, to the left is the Updike family graves, marked by an obelisk, with other grave stones. To the right of the church are two rows of grave stones, which mark St. Paul's Church ministers. There are other groups of graves behind the church, and further right, there are other graves, beyond the stairs.
It is a pretty place, worth a visit.
