John Keats (1795 – 1821) was one of the leading poets of the English romantic movement[1]. As a youth Keats was apprenticed to an apothecary, and before turning to poetry full time he studied medicine at Guys and in 1816 qualified as a dresser of wounds and a Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries[2]. There is a blue plaque marking his lodgings nearby[3].
The statue is seated on an Alcove that is a remnant of the old London Bridge that was demolished in 1832 after 600 years of service[4]. It is a listed building [5].
The statue is by sculptor Stuart Williamson and was unveiled by Poet Laureate Andrew Motion in October 2007 [6]
