“In about 40 minutes,” organizer Stephane Racle said, “Paul Gross is going to be here.” This was quite a surprise to the attendees because unlike other cast members Paul hadn't been able to confirm his appearance.
“I’m amazed that you’re all here,” said Paul Gross, after he sat and removed his sunglasses.
Explaining his theory on the shows popularity while signing a poster Paul said,“I think it’s got something to do with what the Mountie symbolizes internationally”. “To some, it’s that there is this pristine place where people are really solid and straight, good, honest and kind.
“And anything with a lip-reading wolf is going to do well.”
“It’s very moving to meet you all,” he said before leaving.
Due South, which starred Gross as a Mountie fighting crime in Chicago, went off the air 12 years ago. But the release of the show on DVD in recent years has renewed its cult following and attracted new fans.
The convention -- named RCW 139 after a licence plate that appeared in the show, and featuring episode screenings and a presentation by a real, live Mountie -- started in 1996, while the show was still airing on CTV. After Due South went off the air in 1999, the gatherings stopped, until Racle, a 34-year-old aerospace engineer from Kentville, N.S., decided to resurrect the conventions in 2008.
Stephane, and his fellow organizers, John, Brent & Sarah did a great job pulling off this convention. I have to say it was even better than the one in 2008!
