“Their Name Liveth For Evermore“
This monument and those words help us to remember our ancestors who fought and died in Wars in foreign lands, namely - The Great War - 1914-1918; The Second World War - 1938-1945; the Korean War, and the war in South-East Asia.
The Merchant Navy was added to New Plymouth's war memorial cenotaph on 2 September 2006 to acknowledge its place as the fourth service who fought and lost their lives in the theatres of War, joining the Royal New Zealand Navy, Army and Air Force.
Unfortunately about the same time an unsuccessful attempt was undertaken to add to the cenotaph a memorial plaque dedicated to all servicewomen who served their country in time of war. This was not permitted, and shamefully is mounted on a boulder in the stone wall in the adjacent garden outside the old RSA /Taranaki Club rooms opposite the cenotaph.
