In Cambridge, near the Alewife MBTA Red Line Station and garage, is a place known as Jasper White's Summer Shack. At the entrance, there is a tall sculpture of a Gloucester fisherman, complete in yellow raincoat and hat, and a pipe.
To see him, you have to go around the other side of the building from Route 2. The entrance is from Cambridgepark Drive, opposite the road to take to go into the garage, and has a sign on the left side saying Bertucci's parking, and a sign on the right side that says "Alewife Plaza - Summer Shack - Mohr & McPherson." Note: the parking lot for the Summer Shack doubles as the overflow parking lot for the T, so you may have to find parking elsewhere to visit the mark in the day.
What is especially interesting about this waymark is that, according to the web site for that restaurant, the restaurant became Jasper White's Summer Shack in May 2000, only six months before the strip was made. Jasper White had a restaurant on Boston's waterfront before closing it due to the expected downturn due to the highway construction (a.k.a. "The Big Dig"), and decided to open a different restaurant elsewhere. He now has four other locations and has a catering service, too.
But we're here for the fisherman statue guarding the entrance. There he stands, with his hands clasped together. His head is taller than the rest of his body. His white bearded chin juts out, as well as his nose. The comic strip gave him a happier appearance, but in person, he looks stone serious. He is well taken care of, however, and should be in 'ship-shape' for many years to come.
Zippy and he were 'trading yarns' so to speak. In the last panel, Zippy is reclining on the pipe. I don't think I want to try that - it doesn't look comfortable!
