The Herbert has recently undergone a £20 million redevelopment which has transformed the site. They are now are home to 8 new permanent galleries, temporary exhibitions and events spaces, education spaces, a new History Centre and Herbert Media studios.
The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is named in honour of the eminent industrialist Sir Alfred Herbert (1866 to 1957). Sir Alfred was an engineer who set up a company in Coventry in 1887 to make components and tools for Coventry's cycle industry. Alfred Herbert Ltd grew to become probably the biggest machine tool manufacturer in the world.
