Perhaps the oddest play...thing I've ever seen.
Set in an area on the Mystic Lakes, in the Mystic River Reservation, this little place is a surprise to find, to say the least. The area contains a large, grassy field, a boat landing, and a wooded preserve. After parking your car, you head down the path into the woods, and walk for maybe 1000 feet to the play area on your right.
What is it? It's a collection of stylized concrete animals, painted in pastels, with the letters they begin with embedded in their side. For example, the turtle has a 'T', the rabbit has an 'R', and so on. There are nine animals in all - the rest are a kangaroo (with child in pouch), elephant, pig, giraffe, moose, camel, and a zebra (well, presumably a zebra - it's painted red, but has a 'Z' on its side).
The animals themselves are in reasonably good condition (although they need a new coat of paint), probably owing to the area's remoteness. The things have to be at least 30 years old, and probably date to the '50s or earlier. A truly unique experience, but not necessarily for the kids.
