The building was built as a homestead cabin by Howard Lee in 1949. The building served as the first post office for the new town of Soldotna from 1949 to 1951. Howard's wife Maxine served as the first postmaster. Soldotna was created when World War II veterans were given preferential homestead rights in the area and began arriving in the late 1940s.

The building is located adjacent to Soldotna Elementary School. It best to visit after school hours or on non-school days.
