Sara Jeannette Duncan, famous author and journalist, made history when she became the first woman to be hired as a professional journalist in Canada, writing for the Toronto Globe.

Sara was born in Brantford in 1861, and married Everand Cotes in 1891. She is most often referred to by her maiden name.
She was a teacher and then took a position with the Washington Post in 1885, where she interviewed Emily Pauline Johnson, one of her former classmates.
Sara chose to use the pseudonym "Garth" and the pen name "Garth Grafton" when she wrote.
Sara eventually moved on to take a position with the Montreal Star, where she was the Parlimentary correspondent.
She is best known for her 1904 novel, "The Imperialist."
She often said, "One loses many laughs by not laughing at oneself."
