New Bern, founded in 1710 by Christoph von Graffenried, is the second oldest town in North Carolina. Graffenried named it after his home town, Bern, Switzerland. Bern translates to "bear" and so bears are prominently featured throughout the town and on New Bern's municipal flag.
Description from the Inventory page:
The bear is painted black. It is walking, and its open mouth reveals white teeth and a red tongue. Sculpture was reportedly a gift from Bern, Switzerland. Prior to 1932, it was installed on the facade of the old City Hall building on the 200 block of Craven Street. Relocated to 300 Pollock St in 1932.
