The Pentland Hills are a range of hills to the south-west of Edinburgh, Scotland. The range is around 20 miles in length, and runs south west from Edinburgh towards Biggar and the upper Clydesdale.
Scald Law is the highest of the Pentland Hills and is composed of Devonian volcanic rock. From its summit, most of the other Northern and Central hills and tops can be seen.
The origin of the name is uncertain. Some claim it derives from scald being an old name for blackberry. other sources claim it is from the Scots Language word 'scawed', meaning bare.
