Per the VMI walking tour brochure:
Washington Statue, erected in 1856, is a replica of Houdon’s famed marble likeness of George Washington. It was taken by Union forces as a war trophy when VMI was shelled and burned in 1864 and later returned to the Institute. (Reference link below.)
