What a gem this building is. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 (#84003127). It is a double building, addressed 717 and 719 Manvel (Route 66). The dates at the top of the building are 1897 - 1898. The building is called the Mascho building after its original owner. The building's architect and builder are unknown.
The reference to a privy in the NRHP designation refers to a brick privy in the alley behind this building. It is the only extant example of a brick privy in Lincoln County. It is a one-story, brick outhouse, constructed ca. 1920. It was a public toilet, the building being 56 inches square, with brick bearing walls 78 inches high.
It is unusual because it has the original plumbing, which includes a flush mechanism. This flushing device was patented by Sr. Thomas Crapper in 1891.
The Outhouse is architecturally sound, with its original walls, floor and toilet intact. The shake roof has been repaired and the deteriorating chimney stack was replaced. The interior floor is unfinished concrete; the interior walls are plaster over brick.
In 1966, the Museum of Pioneer History moved into this building at the 717 Manvel address. In 1982 the twin building at 719 Manvel was purchased with funds raised by the historical society. These two buildings are some of the oldest structures in Lincoln County.
The museum has a website at www.pioneermuseumok.org and is open from Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:00 - 4:00.
Chandler is the county seat of Lincoln County, and has a population of approximately 2850 people. It was settled after the land run of September 28, 1891. On May 30, 1897, a tornado destroyed most of the town and killed 14 people. The town sits on historic Route 66 and has several vintage attractions to appeal to devotees of "The Mother Road."
