Near the old courthouse is the SITE OF WILMER MCLEAN'S HOUSE, where the Confederate surrender took place.
---- Virginia - A Guide to the Old Dominion State, 1940.
Per the National Park guide, the house was disassembled to move it to the Chicago World Fair, but financing fell through. It was then to be moved and reassembled in Washington, DC, but those plans were never completed, so the wood rotted away. Fortunately, a complete set of architectural plans were made in support of the relocation effort, so the house is accurately rebuilt (except for the addition of modern electricity). The lower part of the foundation is original brick. The rest are old and new mixed.
