Center of Population, Illinois - U.S. Benchmarks on Waymarking.com

After the 2000 census, the NOAA National Ocean Service (NOS), the Census Bureau, and the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) sponsored a project to monument each state's center of population. To date, 21 of these state monuments have been accepted into the NGS National Spatial Reference System database. Information on the locations of 18 additional state monuments has been obtained from various sources.
This station was dedicated July 10, 2004 but has not yet been accepted into the NGS database. It is located at the edge of Centennial Park in Mazon, Illinois.

Geocache GC1Z7TN is located within 10 feet of this marker and makes for an easy twofer for your visit. Also, there are additional images of the marker available in the cache gallery. I used those pics in order to be able to dig up the disk as it sits in the middle of a limestone path at the edge of the park.
