The Chautauqua fish hatchery is located in the Town of Chautauqua, near the middle of Lake Chautauqua. This is the only New York DEC hatchery currently raising pure strain muskellunge, which are obtained from netting and egg collection on Chautauqua Lake, and in some years other waters.
Production of muskellunge at this facility uses a combination of in-hatchery and outside/pond rearing to maximize survival of the 25-30,000 8"+ fingerling muskellunge stocked out to Chautauqua Lake and other area waters. The twelve, 1-acre hatchery ponds are also used to rear approximately 250,000 fingerling walleye. These walleye are also stocked to Chautauqua Lake and other area waters.
At the time of this visit in early July 2010, the hatchery ponds were empty.
