The school, which was Northallerton Grammar School and then became Northallerton College, can be traced back to St Cuthbert's Day (20th March) 1322.
This plaque is placed on the wall of the building, just opposite the parish church, which was the Grammar School from 1776 until 1906. Previously to this the medieval grammar school stood in the churchyard and this newer building was also on church land. The school then moved to new premises on the edge of town in what is now Grammar School Lane, and which I attended from 1956 until 1963. This building is now the hub of the Northallerton College.
A famous old boy of the school was John Radcliffe (1652–1714), founder of Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital and physician to William of Orange. The old building is now occupied by a firm of solicitors and is Grade II listed.
