The station was put on in 1904, the station building arose in the year 1906. Between 1913 and 1965 a small railway existed to Frauenwald which began at the station 'Rennsteig'. The last level-according holiday traffic by the railway station occurred in 1998. Today the station is used for arrangements and 'nostalgia journeys' of the steam road friends of the middle 'Rennsteig' (german: Dampfbahnfreunde mittlerer Rennsteig).

The station is a dead-end station. This was operational necessary because in the beginning on the distance spur-gear locomotives were used which had to stand to the avoidance of a snatch of the wagon coupling always down to the valley. By the switchback turn in the peak of the section the spur-gear locomotives stood without moving automatically down to the valley. In 1927 the rearrangement of the gear-wheel operation occurred to the frictional one. In addition, the drawing of the trains about the steeply sloping section was admitted, so that for driving round of the trains a suitable rail became necessary at the station. The dead-end station in the peak of the section was furthermore necessary because with steam locomotives smoke deduction must point always downwards to valley to avoid a too low water level in the steam boiler.

Since 2007 the station has a new information center for the biosphere reserve 'Vessertal' - Thuringian Forest (german: Biosphärenreservat Vessertal - Thüringer Wald).
