The history of the Bürgerspital dates back to the Middle Ages. Over time it had grown to an organization too big to handle for the owning community. As a consequenceit was split up in 1973 into the University Hospital and the Bürgerspital in its current form.
Bürgerspital is dedicated for eldercare and rehabilitation (especially after spinal injuries). The headquarter is in the North-West of Basel close to the French border. In addition it runs several residential facilities and clinics all over the canton.
