A favorite resort stop - Burnside Expedition

Camps for Confederate troops early in the war became a Union base and headquarters in March 1862 as Northern troops advanced on Fort Macon from New Bern. The Confederate troops burned all that they thought was useful to the North. Abandoned after the activity, Carolina City became part of Morehead City.
