This is one of many granite posts used to mark points on the boundary lines between towns in Massachusetts, in this case, the Town of Essex and the Town of Hamilton. The letters "E" (for Essex) and "H" (for Hamilton) are inscribed on opposite sides. It is approximately eight inches thick, fifteen inches wide, and three feet high. The marker is leaning at about a sixty degree angle, with the "Essex" side facing up, and the "Hamilton" side facing down.

To reach the marker, take Liberty Road north off Rt 22. It is about 80 yards west of the large building at the end of Liberty Road.

The next adjacent marker heading north is Essex-Hamilton 2, 0.75 mile.
The next adjacent marker heading west is Essex-Hamilton 4, 0.3 mile.
