Adams Mill Covered Bridge spans a scenic section of Wildcat Creek in rural Carroll County, Indiana. The historic 1845 Adams Mill still stands nearby and is connected to the bridge by both road and walking trail.
This bridge was completed in 1872 by the Wheelock Bridge Company. The company was owned by Alpheus Wheelock, who was also an agent for the Smith Bridge Company. The two surviving covered bridges in Carroll County (Adams Mill and Lancaster) were supported by cast iron abutments that were unique to Wheelock. During extensive renovations in 1998-99 the bridge received new poured concrete abutments. A window was also added to each side at that time.
The superstructure is supported by a Howe truss, but arches were later added that have since been determined to be superfluous.
The covered bridge, the nearby mill, and scenic Wildcat Creek all combine to make this bridge particularly worth a visit.
Current Condition of Bridge: Bridgehunter.com lists the superstructure as "fair" and the substructure and deck as "good". By all appearances the bridge is in good condition.
