Destroyed in the 1931 Earthquake, the theatre, along with the entire ruined city of Napier, was rebuilt in art deco style, popular at the time. Redevelopment of the theatre began in 1992 and was completed in two stages over the next five years. Stage two was completed in 1997 making the Napier Municipal Theatre one of the most modern venues in the country and with its art deco heritage this theatre is truly unique.
The theatre is a model of architectural beauty and Art Deco style and its stage has been graced with international acts and local performers alike. The theatre has a seating capacity of 1000.
