Sculptor Alexander Galt created this marble statue in 1860 and presented it as a gift to the University in 1861. Originally placed in the dome room the statue was saved, by students, from the October 1895 fire that gutted the Rotunda. Today the statue stands in the upper entrance hall facing the lawn, a view that is said to have been most pleasing to Jefferson himself.
