In 1729, the king of Spain, King Philip V, declared the land around the San Pedro Springs to be "ejido," or public land (1). Today the park comprises 46 acres. The oldest public park in the United States is the Boston Commons, Boston, MA, having been declared public land in 1634 (2). The second oldest park in the United States is San Pedro Springs Park, declared public land in 1729. Since no other public park in Texas can claim heritage before 1729, San Pedro Springs Park is the oldest public park in Texas.
The natural springs flowing in San Pedro Springs park were given the name of San Pedro Springs by Father Espinosa on April 13, 1709 (3). In 1729, the Spanish government declared the land around these San Pedro Springs public land as mentioned above. Ever since, people have been coming to these springs and this park to enjoy the scenic beauty and the clean spring water for both recreation and relaxation.
